Cultural relations between the East and the West have been evident and fruitful in many areas, as this art exhibition Japanese Woodblock Prints and the Belle Époque, from Monet to Hokusai organized by the Valladolid City Hall modestly comes to show, particularly the remarkable influence Japanese art had in the most outstanding figures of the Belle Époque.

By the late 19th Century, when Japan opened up its doors, a wave of Japonisme spread around the Western world. Since then, the impact of the Country of the Rising Sun in the West was palpable and pretty soon the Japanese culture became a powerful source of inspiration for many European artists.

The influence was so strong, that creators of the caliber of Monet, Van Gogh or Toulouse-Lautrec introduced elements of Japanese art in their works and even copied Japanese prints.

This exhibition highlights that art provides incomparable testimony to illustrate the past. Indeed, the themes displayed in this magnificent exhibition reflect the spirit that, back in that period of peace and prosperity, prevailed in Japanese and European societies, when activities like theater-going, travelling, sports and leisure were common among those who moved around in the artistic circles.

The Valladolid City Hall is extremely pleased to host this exhibition and have the possibility of offering our neighbors and visitors this splendid art display that includes works on paper by some of the greatest Japanese and European artists from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

El intercambio de experiencias, trabajos y conocimientos siempre trae consigo el enriquecimiento de una sociedad.

Las relaciones culturales entre oriente y occidente han sido y son comunes en muchos ámbitos, centrándonos hoy en el mundo de la pintura.

La exposición La estampa japonesa y la Belle Époque, de Toulouse-Lautrec a Hokusai, que presenta el Ayuntamiento de Valladolid, nos descubrirá a muchos la influencia del arte japonés en las figuras más representativas de la Belle Époque.

A finales del siglo XIX, cuando Japón volvió a abrir sus puertas, una ola de japonismo cubrió el mundo occidental. El impacto de Japón en occidente durante aquellos años fue impresionante y, pronto, la cultura nipona comenzó a ser fuente de inspiración para muchos artistas europeos.

Tal fue el influjo que artistas de la talla de Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec o Monet incluyeron algún elemento japonés en sus obras e, incluso, llegaron a realizar copias de grabados japoneses.

Esta muestra pone de relieve cómo el arte es, también, el mejor testigo del devenir de la historia. Así, los temas que protagonizan la exposición reflejan las actividades con las que tanto la sociedad japonesa como la europea ocupan esos días de prosperidad y paz: el teatro, los viajes, el deporte o las aficiones de disfrute son comunes en ambos artes.

Para el Ayuntamiento de Valladolid es un verdadero orgullo acoger esta muestra y poder ofrecer a nuestros ciudadanos esta suerte de exposición, con grandes obras en papel de los mayores referentes del arte nipón y europeo de la época.
